Vineland, NJ— Vineland is home to a diverse community and has been referenced as the “most garden-est city” in New Jersey. With various options for locally sourced produce, one can only imagine the taste of authentic food in the region. Luckily, I was able to experience this at Julio’s on Main.

The Magnolia Court plaza is often packed, so finding a parking spot was difficult but completely worth it. I would recommend arriving early because once everyone leaves work and school, this is the plaza they come to for a bite to eat.

The interior was quaint but full of personality. Photos and local “thank yous” decorate the walls.

As soon as you enter, you can see individuals working hard in the kitchen. A seating counter runs along the wall for those who would prefer to dine in.

I was cheerfully greeted by the woman behind the counter. She talked to me as if she had seen me a hundred times. It turned out that she was Christine, one of the owners. Everyone who arrived after me received the same hospitable treatment while waiting for their authentic Mexican cuisine.

I asked for my food to arrive as it was completed rather than all at once. Taking advantage of the $2 taco special, I ordered shrimp and vegetarian tacos* made with Beyond Meat, a plant-based substitute. I also had a vegetable empanada that featured potatoes, mushrooms, and cheese.

* Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available for most menu selections; however, they vary in price.

The shrimp tacos were delicious, but the vegetarian tacos stole the show. They were well-seasoned and tender. I shared them with a carnivorous friend who was surprised by how good they were.

Many plant-based substitutes either taste sickeningly like meat or too much like a substitute, but these tacos had the perfect balance of being healthy and tasting sensational.

While I kept my order pretty basic, there are various options to excite your palate. There are freshly made chips with housemade dips and traditional sides like Mexican rice and black beans.

Appetizers also include options such as Mexican street corn (elotes) and chorizo-stuffed jalapeños. You can view the entire menu here.

It was a great experience, and I now have a new favorite spot! There isn’t a large sitting area, so it’s best to get your food as takeout or enjoy it at one of the outside picnic tables.

There is a rumored expansion, so customers can look forward to bringing the entire family to dine inside!

Be on the lookout for their food truck, and always take advantage of Taco Tuesday!
